Summer Programs

The Marine Mammal Stranding Center offers fun, interactive, and educational summer programs.

ALL PROGRAMS REQUIRE PRE-REGISTRATION.  Most have participant number limitations.  Register Early.

Mock Stranding Program:

Come join us for a hands-on lesson that teaches you what our Stranding Technicians do here at the Center!  Learn about some of the fascinating animals that pass through New Jersey, why they strand, and how we help them. Together, all participants will perform a simulated rescue using a model animal (dolphin or sea turtle) and real equipment on the beach!

Please note: these are not drop-off programs. ALL CHILDREN MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT AT ALL TIMES. Adults do not have to pay for the program/participate, but each child participant must be registered.

Seining:

Bring the whole family to the beach to learn about the fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other critters in our bays!  The program includes a short, guided beach walk to introduce some of the plants and animals that live in New Jersey and then a chance to use our seining nets in the water to collect small animals.

*We STRONGLY recommend that all participants wear water shoes for this program*

Terrapins, Penguins, and Estuaries, oh my! We are very lucky to have speakers join us from other organizations to talk about the animals they work with and what they're doing to help them.

Speaker: Kim from the Margate Terrapin Rescue Project

Join the Margate Terrapin Rescue Project to learn about your local Diamondback Terrapins, how you can help save these unique creatures and why exactly terrapins are indeed crossing the road!   The presentation and program will explore Diamondback terrapins, a special type of turtle that lives in the back bays of the barrier islands. This program will also focus on terrapins, the threats they are facing locally and ways the Margate Terrapin Rescue Project is working to protect them. There will be hands-on activities including an interaction with a live terrapin.

Speaker: Kaitlin Gannon from Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve N.J.

The Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve (JC NERR) is situated on the Mullica River/ Great Bay estuary, nearly 115,000 acres of land in southern New Jersey. What is an estuary? Estuaries are habitats where rivers meet the ocean, and the Mullica River/Great Bay estuary is one of the most pristine estuaries along the mid-Atlantic coast! We will discuss the many species that call the estuary home, the important services it provides to people, and what is going on at the Reserve to help protect this essential habitat.
